I am not giving you the detailed information about the Search Engine History and will not provide you with complete knowledge of all the Search Engines but will surely help you in understanding which Search Engines dominated. Its the result of highly great calculated development that give the birth to what we call today as Search Engine.

Before 1990, there was no any way to search any thing on Internet. At that time there were a very few websites. Most websites contained collections of files that we could download (by FTP) if we knew that they were there. History of Search Engine can be said as started in A.D. 1990. The very first tool used for searching on the Internet was Archie. It was created in 1990 by "Alan Emtage", a student at McGill University in Montreal. The Archie Database was made up of the file directories from hundreds of systems. If Archie was the grandfather of all search engines, then Veronica was the grandmother of search engines, developed by the University of Nevada Computing Services. A Gopher server stores plain-text documents while an FTP server stores other kinds of files including images, programs, etc.
